clarissa centers from Making A Lather

you may remember I wrote this about my clarissa quilt.

I saw this quilt on sane, crazy, crumby blog and loved it. She loved it from Kathy quilts. And Kathy loved it from the Shelbourne museum. Quilting is a hobby that links us to the past and to the future, a gift that keeps on giving. Thank you to all the lovely quilters who ply their art. You have enriched my life. And my daughter is an amazing quilter, too.......

I am happy to say all 36 centers are done. And, I thought, I would put it away again for ...

clarissa quilt progress from Making A Lather

I rediscovered this project while cleaning up messes. I had a stack of related fabric scraps that I really liked, and, I started a year or so ago to make an old hourglass block quilt. I thought before I put it away in the ufo closet, I would just cut to make sure I would have enough and make 36 centers. sounded easy. the centers only have 4 hourglass blocks.

I cut most of what I had, and, then, took count to see if I would need to add more fabrics. I definitely need more. It was not as easy ...

stash report 2/12/2023 from Making A Lather

I found these pieces of woven plaids at goodwill for 99 cents each. The regular price now for  up to 1 yard is 3.99.  2 yards or more is 5.99. Someone didn't like these and marked them 99. I like them so I snatched them up to take home.

stash report 2/5/2023 from Making A Lather

I don't have new fabric this week. I have been cutting scraps. I cut 1 1/2 inch strips at the last, if I can't cut anything larger. There was 1 pound 2 ounces of scraps in this size. If there are 3 yards in a pound, I have a little over 1 yard.

1 1/2 inch strips

When I have chunks, I cut them into 5 inch, 3 1/2 inch, 2 1/2 in, 2 inch, and 1 1/2 inch squares. I also will cut rectangles into 2 x 3 1/2 inch and ...

crazie mazie from Making A Lather

I haven't started a new quilt. I am just cleaning up the odd scraps near my sewing machine. The fact that the little string blocks are the right size for quiltville's newer pattern crazie mazie is purely a coincidence. Sometimes, a girl, just has to make string blocks. The mess, and the need for no thinking sewing combine, and, string blocks are born.

These are quick, cute little 5 inch blocks that use the smallest bits. I have finished a couple of big quilts lately and I am giving myself a reward.

And any pieces that are too ...

Stash report December 4, 2022 from Making A Lather

Someone, at guild open sew, gifted these squares to me. They filled a plastic shoe box. I had found another scrap bag of squares earlier- here- and had decided what I was going to do with them. I need to do that again. They are not all the same size and will need trimming. The squares are about 3 inches. Any ideas?

blossom blocks from Making A Lather

I made a few blossom time blocks as part of my rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy. I finished the center of rhododendron quiltville mystery

I made zipper blocks. I put frolic quiltville mystery quilt on the longarm as part of my one monthly goal.

I have been ironing scraps from a gifted bag.

I have been enjoying wonderful fall weather. It is still 70 during the day with pretty aqua blue skies. I am not looking to plunging into total darkness with changing our clocks back, tomorrow.

friday group and bunnies from Making A Lather

One of my 5 quilts ufos is this little bunny quilt I started a few years ago. I opened the box, recently, and, discovered fabric and bunny blocks. At my Friday group, I used a jelly roll to make the solid sashing and a matching fat quarter bundle to make the squares sashing. I have the perfect border fabric for it in my stash. I wanted this for a baby quilt.

Judy surprised us with a finished boho heart top that is gorgeous. Now, I am the last one that needs to finish.

A 30 gallon bag of scraps from Elaine Adair Pieces

I mentioned my gifted bag of scraps in a previous post.  At first glance, that bag didn't look very appealing but the simple job of sorting them into lights and darks encouraged possibilities. Here is the pretty surprise.  Only a small amount of "lights" was needed from my existing stash.  It still needs some kind of creative border.

It's hot in western Nebraska, upper 90s.

Guild Raffle Quilt for summer 2023 from Elaine Adair Pieces

(It was held a little crooked. )  We said "use taupe", and we were aiming for "Low Volume," and "use what is in your stash"  and "something different."  The blocks were made my members of our local quilting/sewing group.  I finished the border and binding, which is my excuse for infrequent blog posts!  Kathy, a new embroidery-talented member, made a stunning label.

Friend Carol gave me a huge bag of scraps that she inherited from ???, most very small, and some too ugly to use (IMHO).  I sorted them and discovered there was a healthy supply of lights, darks and red ...

stash report April 3, 2022 from Making A Lather

I had a Friday group sew, and, I didn't have a project ready, so, I grabbed a scrap bag and my stripology ruler, and, I started cutting. I always have questions from others about my scrappy cutting and using. It seems a mystery to them. How do I store? how do I use? how do I make all those different colors go together? etc. One of my best quilting buddies saves scraps, too, but, in squares, not strips. I would prefer strips, and, I would be happy to cut them into squares when I need them. Otherwise, I am ...

more scraps from Making A Lather

I have 5 quilts that I am actively trying to finish. But, sometimes scrap management becomes a priority. I started cutting a box of scraps a bit ago, and the mess was getting to me. Time to finish. A few TV shows later, I have strips and squares to use in another quilt.

I had previously blogged about 5 inch squares and they were 10 oz.

3 1/2 in = 9 oz

2 1/2 = 10 oz

2 and 1 1/2 in = 4 oz

Many of my favorite quilts are scrap quilts. And scraps are the same price per ...

scraps time from Making A Lather

I decided it was time to dig out another box of scraps and work on taming them. I adore my scraps and I almost feel guilty taking the time to play with them. But, it does create roadblocks to production if they aren't corralled from time to time. I had a low energy evening, a perfect time to sit and sort. This time I decided I wasn't cutting 10 inch squares until I have actually used them. I divided what was in the box into 2 piles. I had one pile of anything I thought would be at ...

a lifetime of scraps from Making A Lather

This has been an eclectic scrap bucket.   Sorting this scrap bucket, I have found some fun surprises. I obviously just threw everything I wanted to clean up into the bucket at one point. I really like old blocks and feel a real urgency to rescue them. But, I don't know what to do with them. So, with indecision, they were doomed to a scoop and tidy.

aren't these wonderful vintage fabrics?

I had already cut the 10 inch square. This was the pile of  scraps that I thought were big enough to have a 5 inch square cut ...

taming the scraps from Making A Lather

My favorite tool for taming my scraps is my creative grids stripology ruler. I have the strip dies for the accuquilt and I use them a lot. But, when I have odd sized smaller pieces of scrap that I plan on using to add variety to my bins, I like to use the template. I have both sizes. I use the original template with a larger scrap, and, the smaller one for ( wait for it) smaller scraps.

It is a quick cut or 2, and I can make several sizes from one scrap.

This is a scrap print that never ...

triangles from Making A Lather

I have a new infusion of scrap triangles to work with in the future. My Friday group donated these lovely scraps to me and there are many aqua and teals in the bunch. That will have to do this week for the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy.

The bag on the right is from my Linda friend's sea swept quilt which is done, which I quilted last week, while I am still piecing mine.

Otherwise, I am making little bits as I get bored with the bigger bits of piecing.

new shirt project from Making A Lather

Part of my stress reliever project for retreat was just sewing 4 patches out of shirts. I started with 2 1/2 inch strips in dark and light and sewed  a bunch whenever I needed to destress in between sea swept.

I'd sew strips for awhile, and, then, subcut them and sew four patches. I was doing just dark and light.

I have one pattern that uses these as frames around a center block. I needed 32 for the sides and a larger set for the top and bottom.  I did get the 32 sewn. I have a few ...
